In my last blog, I defined Mindfulness, as I learned it in class at MIRAVAL.
Today, I want to share the FIRST of the beginning steps we were taught to help us cultivate a daily practice.
#1. ATTENDING TO THE BREATH
“The most basic way to cultivate mindfulness is by bringing attention to the breath. The breath is the literal mind/body connection, and it is always there, always available.” (MIRAVAL)
“When we focus on the breath, our awareness of the moment increases. The idea is not to change, fix or guide the breath, but simply to tune into it. Then as we become familiar with the experience of the breath, it can become a means of tuning in to many other aspect of our experience. The pace of our thoughts decelerates so that we can become more conscious of what we are doing and how we are feeling. The breath is an anchor, helping us to return to the moment whenever we realize we are drifting.” (MIRAVAL)
So, how can we do this?
Simple, pay attention to your breath. Notice when you are holding it (I am super guilty of this while I am working) or when you are breathing in a very shallow manner. Recognize it and simply acknowledge without judgement what is happening at the moment. You will find yourself feeling calmer and your thoughts will stop racing.
